ICBC Acupuncture Coverage in Vancouver: What You Need to Know After a Car Accident

If you’ve been in a car accident in Vancouver, you may already know ICBC helps cover your recovery. What a lot of people don’t realize is that acupuncture is included — and in many cases, it may be fully covered.

What ICBC Actually Covers

ICBC pre-approves up to 12 acupuncture sessions within the first 12 weeks after a motor vehicle accident.

No doctor’s referral or prior approval from ICBC is required to start.

All you need is your ICBC claim number and Personal Health Number (PHN).

How Direct Billing Works

Many clinics, including Reversepain, bill ICBC directly for approved sessions.

That may mean no out-of-pocket cost for you during the covered period — we handle the billing so you can focus on healing. Any additional costs can depend on the clinic’s fees and ICBC’s approved rates.

Common Symptoms Acupuncture Can Support After an Accident

  • Neck pain (including whiplash-related symptoms)
  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Headaches related to muscle tension
  • Joint stiffness
  • Muscle tension and reduced range of motion

Acupuncture won’t undo the accident, but it may help manage pain, stiffness, and muscle tension as part of your recovery.

What If You Need More Than 12 Sessions?

If your recovery takes longer than 12 weeks or you need more than the pre-approved sessions, your practitioner can submit a Treatment Plan to ICBC for additional treatment. These requests are reviewed based on your recovery progress and treatment needs, and approved treatment can continue to be billed directly to ICBC.

Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?

Not quite. Both use thin, solid needles, but they are used within different treatment approaches.

Acupuncture uses points selected based on your symptoms and the practitioner’s clinical assessment. Dry needling typically targets areas of muscular pain and myofascial trigger points.

At Reversepain, we often combine both, depending on what your recovery actually needs.
